i often arrive at mutual frustration about someone's need for me to use words in an objectively defined way. im much more interested in the relationships between things than the things themselves, whereas i think most people i communicate with are very keen to step on the solid ground of a definition.
when im communicating, im not trying to arrive at a final conclusive programmatic phrase that inputs the correct thought into another person's brain. i think this is a rare miracle unavailable to most interesting concepts. it's more like poetry (bear with me), where you use an accumulation of semantic vectors to push and pull the listener into position over a spot in semantic space. the individual pushes and pulls of a phrase may not quite get them there individually, or even seem like they're sensical in isolation, but combined, they help the listener arrive at a conclusion.
at first, they're buffetted around, confused and disoriented, potentially quite frustrated at the lack of fixed ground.
done well, eventually the pushes and pulls can be carefully balanced out until the listener reaches understanding, and it feels beautiful, earned and connective. they are unsupported by a definition, yet positioned in the exact right spot, acted upon by the exact right forces.
it's blissful. it makes me very happy when this happens.
humans aren't words, we aren't creatures of language, we evolved an abstract and objective system to communicate effectively. we compressed our feelings, our understanding, our ideas, our essence into a format that is finite, scalable and effective. but the words rarely coincide perfectly with the meaning. to uncompress the feeling, the meaning, the idea is beautiful and loving and connective. it expands the possibility of connection beyond the norm. this is what art has done forever, love is something you can better understand by an accumulation of forces represented by words, images and patterns.
agreeableness and disagreeableness are both forces that can be acts of love and understanding, it is a force used to push people towards shared understanding. if you do one without the other, you can only push in one direction.
to do so in either direction is to crush the frog
