🐌 the double blind leading the blind
Psychology is being ruined by acting like it exists in a vacuum, absent political and academic incentives, and has been perverted into a framework for cramming people back into a normative state of productivity, with a focus on short term wins based on the most marketable strategies to health institutions.
The poster child for interventions based on 'good' evidence is Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, or CBT. It is for the most part a scam. A treatment that is efficacious in short term lab experiments but indistinguishable from most psychotherapeutic interventions in terms of effectiveness in naturalistic studies. Some people here may point to the efficacy of treatment in lab studies, and hold little regard for actual clinically relevant effectiveness in the long term.
Those people tend to be so fixated on the aesthetic of quantitative data collection that they forget all data has a bias, an assumed perspective and is a tiny cultivated slice of the inner life of any participant - just because it's a number with a p-value doesn't mean it isn't build on a mountain of assumptions and curation - the field of psychology suffers from these problems far more than most sciences because unlike medicine there is no failsafe to prevent cultural norms dictating what a symptom is and what 'cured' means because it's all in your head. I can take nearly any data from nearly any study and concoct nearly any narrative I want.
We've seen this from the historical diagnosis of sexualities, to the modern gender dysphoria diagnosis, to scandalous catastrophes when it comes to profitable findings like multiple personality disorder and embedded memories.
Therapy can be helpful, but the modern iteration of therapy has no regard for the material circumstances of its patients, barely considering them relevant to intervention, and prioritizes productivity, compliance and integration over long term personal growth, free expression and self-actualization.
It is largely a symbolic plaster on a festering societal wound.
